Register a death

Register a death within 5 days and find out what to do next.

You must register a death within 5 days, unless it's been referred to the coroner.

Before you book

The doctor or hospital will send the medical certificate of cause of death to us. We'll contact you, or you can book once they've told you it's been sent.

Who can register

Usually a relative. If there are no relatives, someone who was present at the death, or the person arranging the funeral.

What we'll ask you

The person's full name, date and place of birth, last address, occupation and, if they were married, their spouse's details. Bring their NHS card or passport if you have them.

After you register

  • We'll give you a certificate for burial or cremation to give to the funeral director.
  • You can buy death certificates for £12.50 each. Banks and others may need one.
  • We can tell government departments for you, using Tell Us Once.

If the death was referred to the coroner

The coroner's office will tell you when you can register.
