Report a problem with a rented home

Get help if your landlord will not fix repairs, damp, mould or safety problems.

Your landlord must keep your home safe and in good repair. This includes the structure, heating, hot water, gas and electrics.

Tell your landlord first

Tell your landlord about the problem in writing, such as by email or text. Keep a copy and take photos. Give them a reasonable time to fix it.

If you rent from a housing association, contact them directly. If they do not fix it, you can complain to the Housing Ombudsman.

If your private landlord does not fix it

Report it to us. We can inspect your home and make your landlord fix serious problems, such as:

  • damp and mould
  • no heating or hot water
  • unsafe electrics or gas
  • pests or leaking roofs
  • a lack of fire safety
