School attendance and absence

What to do if your child is ill or misses school, and how we can help.

Children must go to school every day it's open, unless they're ill or have permission to be away.

If your child is ill

Tell the school on the first morning they're away. Most children with mild illnesses, such as a cold, should still go to school. Check the NHS guidance on whether your child is too ill for school.

Holidays in term time

Headteachers can only allow time off in exceptional circumstances. If you take your child out without permission, you can be fined £80 for each parent and each child.

If your child is struggling to go to school

Talk to the school first. Our attendance support team can also help families, for example if a child is anxious about school.

Educating your child at home

If you choose to educate your child at home, write to their school to take them off the roll. We'll contact you to offer advice.
