Gritting and winter weather

From October to April, we grit main roads when ice or snow is forecast. We cannot grit every road.

Which roads we grit

We grit about 40% of roads, including:

• A and B roads and main bus routes
• roads to hospitals, fire and ambulance stations
• steep hills and roads to schools

Grit bins are for anyone to use on roads and pavements nearby, not on private driveways. Report a grit bin that's empty or damaged.
