What goes in each bin

Check which bin to use for recycling, food waste, garden waste and general rubbish.

Putting things in the right bin means more of your waste can be recycled. If a bin has the wrong things in it, we may not be able to collect it.

Search for an item

Type in what you want to throw away, such as "pizza box" or "light bulb", to find out which bin it goes in or where to take it.

Recycling bin (blue lid)

Collected every 2 weeks. You can put in:

  • paper, newspapers and magazines
  • cardboard, flattened
  • plastic bottles, pots, tubs and trays
  • food and drinks cans, and clean foil
  • glass bottles and jars

Rinse containers and put lids back on. Do not put recycling in plastic bags.

Food waste caddy

Collected every week. You can put in all cooked and uncooked food, including meat, fish, bones, tea bags and coffee grounds. You can line your caddy with a compostable bag or newspaper.

Garden waste bin (green lid)

If you have signed up for garden waste collection, you can put in grass cuttings, leaves, hedge trimmings, small branches and flowers.

General waste bin (black lid)

Collected every 2 weeks, on the weeks your recycling is not collected. Use this for anything that cannot be recycled, such as nappies, crisp packets, plastic film and polystyrene.

Things we cannot collect

Take these to a household waste recycling centre:

For furniture and large items, book a bulky waste collection. For needles and medical waste, read about clinical waste collections.
